The Devil's Jumps, Treyford, West Sussex

4th January 2023

The Devil's Jumps are located near Treyford, West Sussex in the South Downs National Park.

The Devil's Jumps consist of five bell barrow mounds of varying sizes, dating to the Bronze Age, between 3000 to 4000 years ago.  There were many other barrows in the region, which have been destroyed by agriculture, however these are  the best preserved.

The barrows are arranged in a long line running from south-east to northwest, and are positioned to line up with the sun set of the Midsummer solstice.  The largest barrow has a diameter of 26-34 meters, with a height of 4.8 meters.  There is evidence of a sixth barrow at the site.  When the larger barrows were excavated in the Nineteenth Century, traces of cremated bones were found in two on the mounds, although the others contained no remains at all.

The Devil's Jumps are located along the A286 in Treyford, about 4 miles outside Cocking, West Sussex.
