Knitting at the Theatre Deli

All good things must come to an end.... I have finished my series of 4 experimental knitting workshops at the Theatre Deli. I greatly enjoyed working at the venue, meeting new people, and most of all sharing the creative possibilities of knitting. A big thank you to everyone who came!

September - Material Adventures in Knitting

Explore the creative potential of knitting for artwork and sculpture, using simple techniques and unconventional materials.

  • Knitting with unconventional materials (wire, garden twine, plastics and string), fancy and neon yarns.

  • Making yarns from strips of fabric and adapting commercial yarns.

  • Threading beads, buttons or fabric onto the yarn.

  • Combining textiles with sculptural materials (plaster, clay and wax).

October - Decaying Structures in Knitting

Inspired by natural forms, explore the creative potential of knitting, using simple techniques and unconventional materials.

  • Making holes, and creating an open structure (loose tension or large knitting needles)

  • Exploring yarns and materials (twine, paper yarn, wire, fabric strips)

  • Forming a 3D structure using simple techniques (knitting, crochet, wrapping and stitch)

  • Creating decayed surfaces using a heat tool, and visceral effects with latex and acrylic gels.

December - Knitting in Narrative

Textiles are intertwined with everyday life. Explore creating narratives using simple knitting techniques for art and sculpture.

  • Recycling and making yarns from strips of fabric.

  • Celebrating the past life of the textiles through darning, repair and stitch.

  • Using colour to express feelings and atmosphere.

  • Basic knitting and embroidery techniques.

  • Dying/staining yarns or fabric.

  • Creating mood and character through the positioning of sculptures.

January - Feminist Knits

Using the body as a source of inspiration, explore the creative potential of knitting to create artwork, with simple techniques.

  • Knitting slits and simple tubular forms.

  • Building organic structures with multiples.

  • Creating wombs and other internal organs.

  • Flat and 3D methods using circular and double pointed needles, and shaping.

  • Creating hairy effects with wet and/or dry felting, and building smooth surfaces with wax.

The sessions included a display of samples and sketchbooks to inspire further exploration after the session. The workshop are aimed at anyone with an interest in textiles or mixed media sculpture, wishing to explore the artistic potential of knitting. The emphasis is on creating experimental samples, rather than a finished piece.
