Very pleased to be able to show my work in the vibrant space of the Art House Cafe in Southampton. The display in the window is a continuation of the K6 gallery exhibition, but with some additional pieces.
The knitted sculptures confront traditional ideas on femininity, by examining the conflict between individual needs and the pressure from society to conform to a standard role and beauty ideal. While pink is often viewed as a girly colour, changing the form, context or material can make the colour seem repulsive.
The work explores the duplicity of the Mother archetype, which can be nurturing and life-giving, yet also terrifying and destructive. Inspired by the minimalist creatures in the film Alien, many sculptures feature disembodied internal organs with multi-functional body parts. Ambiguity is created by blurring several oedipal stages into one piece, making it unclear if it is male or female, benign or malicious.
The show can be seen 24/7 in the window of the Art House until the end of October.
