A New Chapter

New piece explores UK Period Poverty for the Chapters Project. The project run by Chapel Arts Studio invites studio artists and those associated to the organisation through other projects, such as Block Chain to submit an A3 piece to form an archive of dissent.

My contribution is an extension of my earlier work exploring UK Period Poverty. The piece is made from a worn cloth – which I darned and patched, before stitching the blood and the text.

My piece Votes are not enough... commemorates the 100 year anniversary of women gaining the vote, but also comments on the inequality of poverty that exists in the UK in 2018. The inspiration came from a Plan UK statistic, revealing that 1 in 10 young women in the UK cannot afford to buy sanitary products. Poverty affects all genders and ages, however girls have the additional burden of menstruation, with some forced to miss school during their period.

While votes and campaigning for equal pay is essential for equality – it does not address people’s basic right to food, housing and being paid a decent wage to live in a dignified manner. Everyone is created equal – but some are more equal than others.
