Really pleased that my piece 'Women's Rights = Human Rights' will be in the Nasty Women Liverpool exhibition, at the Constellations, Liverpool 9th -11th March 2018. All pieces are donated, with the proceeds going to help a Wirral based women's refuge.
The embroidery expresses my concern over the Trump administration’s erosion of women’s rights, with the text ‘Women’s Rights = Human Rights’ taken from a protest banner. The womb, sanctified by religion, has become a political battleground - however control over one’s own body should be a fundamental human right. Based on a traditional patchwork design, the work made from a darned tea towel, celebrates the worn, scared and repaired. The piece acts as an antithesis to capitalist culture, which seeks to control by projecting its own value of womanhood - a perfect, unattainable ideal.
