Very excited to have taken part in Platform 16, and had the opportunity to work with the other talented artists. The exhibition ran from 22nd November until the 2nd December 2017 at the Leyden Gallery.
The platform, now in its fourth year is a quarterly programme, which supports and enables selected artists to work with a respected curator and director, and be introduced to the art world. Previous exhibitions at the gallery have have included Paula Rego, Antony Micallef and Henry Moore, and also a powerful show of photographs featuring acid attack survivors, as highlighted on BBC television and the Metro.*
The exhibition featured knitted sculptures from the Mütter collection. The sculptures explore the Mother archetype, which can be both nurturing and life giving, but also terrifying and destructive. Ambiguity is created by fusing several Oedipus stages into one piece - it is unclear if they are male or female, benign or malicious. The pieces subvert the nurturing associations of textiles, as the homely feel of knitting becomes alien, when shaped into taboo body parts. The soft, flexible sculptures challenge the hierarchy of the arts, by using a medium traditionally associated with women’s work, and consequently considered low art.
