Very happy to take part in the first Nasty Women UK* exhibition, at the Stour Space, London, 22nd - 24th September.
Women Rights are Human Rights
The piece 'Women's Rights - A Woman is Master of Her Womb', expresses my concern over the recent erosion of women’s reproductive rights in the USA, and globally.
The womb, sanctified by religion, has become a political battleground. However every woman should have the right to make a personal choice over contraception and abortion. The words take inspiration from the Marquis de Sade’s Philosophy in the Bedroom, which states, ‘we are always mistress of what we carry in our womb’.
The embroidery is made from recycled woollen blankets and features the patchwork design known as Granny’s Garden, due to their familial, homely association.
Nasty Women
Donald Trump called Hillary Clinton a Nasty Woman for expressing her views. Nasty Women is a global art movement demonstrating solidarity among artists who identify with being a Nasty Woman in the face the erosion of women’s rights, individual rights, and abortion rights. All work in the exhibition is donated and for sale, with the proceeds going to End Violence Against Women.*
The exhibition has recieved a lot of press attention, including pieces in the Metro,* Evening Standard* and Huffington Post.*
