Kinder

This series subverts the nurturing associations of textiles to explore the uncanny.

The collection is an extension of both the Mütter and the earlier Das Unheimliche series.  The work continues the exploration of the Freudian Oedipus Complex, but pays particular attention of the theories of Melanie Klein and Jacques Lacan.

THE UNCANNY

The work takes inspiration from Sigmund Freud his essay Das Unheimliche (The Uncanny, 1919).  Referring to the repression of a once familiar object or experience, which when rediscovered induces fear.

Textiles, such as woollen blankets, knitting and rag doll play a key role in creating the nurturing security of early childhood.  In the work these associations are rendered uncanny, when fused with the turmoil of the developing Oedipus Complex.  As the internal fantasies become externalised, they appear as anthropomorphic creatures shaped in the forms of internal organs.
